Frequently asked questions.
General Questions
1. What does a consultation include?
A consultation with Connected Gardener is a hands-on, collaborative experience. We start with a walk-through of your outdoor space to understand its unique characteristics. During the visit, we’ll introduce you to practical strategies for setting up a thriving kitchen garden and work together to create a plan that aligns with your goals, space, and lifestyle.
2. Do I need experience to succeed with gardening?
Not at all! Most of our clients are beginners. Teaching is our passion and we are excited to equip you with the skills you need to feel confident and capable, turning gardening into a fun and rewarding experience.
3. I have a small yard. Can I still have a garden?
Absolutely! Kitchen gardens can be tucked into unexpected spaces. We can help you maximize your yard by repurposing ornamental landscapes or using small but efficient designs to grow fresh, delicious produce.
4. My yard gets a lot of shade. Will anything grow there?
Yes! While some vegetables need full sun, many herbs and leafy greens thrive in partial shade. We’ll help you choose plants that will flourish in your specific conditions.
Gardening Basics
5. Where do you source your plants?
We believe in the value of community and work closely with local growers and nurseries to provide the highest quality plants. This ensures that your garden begins with strong, naturally cultivated plants suited to your region.
6. Do you use organic gardening practices?
Connected Gardener does not use synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides, opting instead for natural techniques to enrich the soil, manage pests, and nurture your garden. We prioritize non-GMO seeds and plants grown with similar care.
7. How much can I expect my garden to produce?
Your garden’s production depends on its size and what you plant. As a general guideline, you can expect 1–2 servings of greens or smaller vegetables and 1-larger fruit per square foot of garden space each month. A 30-square-foot garden, for example, could yield enough fresh greens for daily use.
8. What happens if I need help after the garden is planted?
We’re here to support you beyond the initial setup. Connected Gardener offers ongoing coaching and seasonal group workshops to ensure your garden thrives. Following your garden consultation, you will be enrolled to receive a free client’s only newsletter with updates, recipes and tips. Whether you have questions, need troubleshooting advice, or want help preparing for the next season, we’ll guide you every step of the way.
9. I’m so busy. I don’t have time to garden. How can I make it work?
With the right setup and timing, a garden can take as little as 5–10 minutes a day to maintain. That’s less time than a trip to the grocery store—and you’ll have fresh produce right outside your door. Many clients find gardening so enjoyable that they want to spend more time in their garden once it’s thriving!

10. Why is gardening so expensive?

Think of your garden as an investment in your health, home, and lifestyle that pays off with fresh, delicious harvests year after year.
